Growth is Not Stagnant

Growth is not Stagnant

Listen parents! It’s really okay if your kiddo isn’t as good in our after-school karate program as you would like. While we advocate perfect practice, we also know that your child’s skill level will change.

Here’s the truth.  The kids who perform well now and doing really well may not be doing so well and on top of the world in 10 years. The ones who are struggling or aren’t as advanced now…well, watch out for them! Your child’s abilities are not stagnant. They will change (for better or worse).

Weak Get Stronger

We love underdogs. The students who aren’t as strong in their karate curriculum at this moment are the ones to watch. Not all kids, but most of them, want to get better. Not being as good now or being a lower belt is motivation that will drive them to be our Legacy MMA all-star champions.

We notice the ones who are struggling and the ones and adjust accordingly. If you ever get a chance to observe any of our after-school karate classes (and we LOVE it when parents are active and show support for their children), you’ll see that after we go through basic curriculum, we’ll break off into groups by skill level. We give yellow and white belts extra coaching and practice so they can improve. We identify students who want to improve and spend a little extra time with them on their technique. We’re dedicated to them and they, in turn, show their gratitude with improvement.

Kids Who Excel Now

Life has taught us that the kids who excel now don’t continue to excel in the future. Maybe it’s because they get cocky and don’t try as hard. Maybe their interests and passions change. Our message to these kids is to always keep growing and always put forth best efforts and continue with perfect practice. Being good now isn’t a life sentence to failure in the future, but it can quickly get there.

Helping Kids Who Excel Now Continue

We are very proud of our students who excel now. They are our upper belts. We train them to be leaders as part of our after-school curriculum. Upper belts help our instructors in various ways. They assist the lower belts with their uniform. Sometimes throughout class, they help with technique. Parents of upper belts should be proud of their young leaders in training. These students worked hard to earn their belt. Remember, our kids don’t get to belt test every time. They have to work hard and prove themselves. This is in class, at home, and at school. Our encouragement will help these students who do well now continue on that successful trajectory.

Parents can help too. Encourage perfect practice and provide positive feedback. Don’t let them quit. Insist they stay dedicated.

One benefit of our karate program is that lessons learned in our after-school programs can be applied to other aspects of life. All of our instructors take their role very seriously knowing that we’re shaping the lives of these young people.
