Parent-Teacher Conferences and After School Karate

For our Gwinnet County families, it’s that time of year. We’ve gotten the emails and letters in our children’s folders. It’s time we face the truth of this very different year our students have faced. Back to school was anything but normal. We know that students learn in their own unique way. So mom and dad, we’re here for you because we’re right there with you.

We want to caution you if your parent teacher conference doesn’t reveal what you thought. It’s no surprise that this year is traumatic for everyone, but especially our children. Our kids probably have developed anxiety if they didn’t have it already. It’s expected that students may not perform in school to the best of their ability.  We have to allow for grace for all involved (students, teachers, and parents).

Our reactions are everything with our children. Go into parent-teacher conferences with an open mind. Go in knowing that your child is amazing and full of potential. What he/she needs most is your love and acceptance.

If your kiddo(s) aren’t where you and the teacher agree, there are things you can do to help your child get back on track.

1.     Love first. Remember to give those hugs and kisses. Kids need our love and attention before all else. It’s amazing what a hug can do in the middle of a meltdown or in the midst of frustration.

2.     Develop a set schedule. Kids need structure. If your schedule feels chaotic, it’s not helping your kiddo. It goes back to anxiety. A schedule is something your kids can find comfort in knowing they will have a routine.

3.     Encourage healthy study habits. Be intentional about homework time. It goes back to our third step of setting a schedule. Make homework time part of that schedule every day. Go over your child’s work for the day and carve out study time. This doesn’t mean you should do your child’s work, you should prompt that time for your child to study and make sure they’re focused on school

4.     Studies show that after school karate programs improve academic success and motivation. We offer a unique after school experience for students. Your child won’t just have karate class every day. We partner with parents to ensure that success at home, at school, and here at Legacy MMA. We want to know if there are issues you’re working on so we can partner with you to develop a strategy to improve grades through focus, self-discipline, leadership training, teamwork, and more.

So mom and dad, no matter what comes from parent-teacher conferences, we’ve got you.

If you’re new to Legacy MMA, we offer a free week of after school karate. We pick up your child from select area schools to make it more convenient for you.
